The photographs presented on this website are classified according to the bird families. The approach in the list suggested below is an attempt to blend traditional families with recent scholarship. The 'Handbook of the Birds of the World' series is doing a fine job of sorting out the basics of traditional families, and retaining the essential groups (e.g., the gulls, the terns, the skimmers) even when recent biochemical evidence shows they are more closely related to each other than are most families. Indeed this works very well for the field birdwatcher who is interesting in searching out a representative of each bird family in the world. When looking for a specific species, start
either with the Non-passerine families or
with the Passerine families.
Most pictures presented here were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 990 / Swarowski AT80 HD combination as explained under the 'digiscoping' section, except eggs and nests taken with the Nikkor objective alone. For an easy dowmloading and optimal screen display, these pictures were saved in JPEG format (200 Kb or less). To obtain uncompressed files, please contact us. Here is a Monitor Calibration Scale.
